On the night of May 29-30, 2024, Israeli army soldiers attacked the Ramallah market and set it ablaze, leaving hundreds of people jobless and as many as thousands deprived of an important meeting place, as well as a central agricultural market for the city.
While I was in Ramallah with some friends, one evening we visited the market, where dozens of people posed for photos, amid smiles, color, laughter and chatter from stall to stall.
Today this place is a pile of charred rubble.
That very evening we walked to the square near Ramallah City Hall, where we found hundreds of families flocking for a party and a performance of traditional dances and music.
I like to remember it that way.
